Dress Code

The Racquet Club is a place where tradition and a welcoming atmosphere come together. To maintain the Club’s character, all members and guests must follow the dress code while in the Clubhouse. Smart Casual attire is required in all areas of the Clubhouse unless an event specifies business casual or formal dress.

  • Smart Casual includes neat, modern office attire that is polished yet comfortable.
  • Children should be appropriately dressed, and those 12 and older must follow the dress code.
  • While the guidelines below set the standard, more formal attire is always welcome.
  • Club employees and managers are responsible for enforcing the dress code throughout the Clubhouse. Management has the final say on what is considered appropriate attire.

Acceptable Attire

  • Collared shirts, polo shirts, sweaters, blouses
  • Khakis, slacks, dark denim (no holes, fading, or fraying)
  • Skirts or dresses
  • Oxfords, loafers, boat shoes, leather sandals
  • Bermuda shorts (Memorial Day–Labor Day, in good condition)

Not Permitted

  • T-shirts
  • Hooded sweatshirts
  • Sweatpants, spandex
  • Halter tops
  • Cargo pants
  • Denim shorts
  • Sneakers or Flip-flops
  • Hats

Clubhouse Entrance Policy

  • The main entrance on 16th Street is reserved for members and guests dressed in accordance with the Club’s dress code.
  • Members and guests wearing athletic attire must use the Sydenham Street entrance to access the Club’s sports and fitness facilities.

Athletic Attire

  • Athletic clothing is permitted on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors but not on the 1st floor or lower level restaurant (except on some tournament weekends).
  • For racquet sports, players must wear athletic shirts, shorts, or pants that are at least 80% white.
  • Protective eyewear and non-marking sneakers are required at all times (except for Court Tennis, where eyewear is encouraged but not mandatory).

Cell Phone and Electronic Device Usage

In order to avoid unduly restricting personal cell phone usage while meeting the Club’s longstanding commitment to respecting the privacy and comfort of all Members and guests, the House Committee with Board approval, has adopted the following policy:

  1. Upon entry into The Racquet Club all cell phones are to be either (a) turned off altogether; or, (b) set to “silent” or “vibrate” mode, thereby permitting Members and their guests to receive calls that they can then return in the accepted and designated areas, via cell phones or through the unlimited, local-use phones that are made available for such purpose in designated areas of the clubhouse.
  2. If a Member or his or her guest must use his or her cell phone, usage is restricted to the business center, Presidents’ Room, Waiting Room, or existing phone booths currently designated and marked on the 1st Floor and 3rd Floor levels.
  3. Use of cell phones for soundless communication (e.g., texting) in other areas should be discrete and of very limited duration.

In addition, the use of laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for conducting business, including editing and composing documents, and engaging in active and sustained communication such as composing and responding to emails, shall be limited to the Business Center, the Gold Leaf Café or appropriately engaged private rooms.  The passive and discrete use of tablets or cell phones for reading is permissible in the 1889 Pub.

Loved your visit? Make it official.
